Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet was built with families in mind. Norwegian Breakaway was named “Best Cruise for Families” in 2013, by Yahoo Travel, while they also snagged the title of one of the “Top Large Cruise Ships for Families” in 2012 by Travel & Leisure magazine. Norwegian is the only cruise line to team up with Nickelodeon to offer fun activities on 4 ships in their fleet: Breakaway, Epic, Jewel, and Gem:
Nickelodeon’s Pajama Jam Breakfast – Come to breakfast in your pajamas and party with the Nickelodeon characters who will sing and dance for you while you enjoy breakfast.
Dora’s Dance Party – Huge dance party for Dora & friends.
Nickelodeon Arts & Crafts – These are great activities for kids and parents to do together
Character Meet & Greets – Plenty of time for autographs and photos.
Norwegian recently reinvented their youth program and have made it better than ever, with programs for babies as young as 6 months up to teens. They’ve expanded activities and events throughout the entire ship and added new age groups that focus on age appropriate fun for the kids of all ages.
Splash Youth Academy (6 months – 12 years) and Entourage Teen Program (ages 13-17 years).
The Splash Academy is a complimentary program that has been revamped for babies/kids ages 6 months to 12 years. They get the chance to enjoy age-appropriate, supervised creative play, sports and more.
The youth staff is well-educated, well trained and certified in CPR and first aid. They take playtime seriously!
The program is further broken into 4 groups:
- Guppies (6 mos-2 years) – Bonding time for parents and children to play together with interactive and sensory activities.
- Turtles (3-5 years) – Hilario Productions presents Cirque du Jour Circus School, arts & crafts, storytelling, treasure hunts, developmental activities, age-specific games, sensory and messy play, and family activities.
- Seals (ages 6-9) – Wii games, treasure hunt, Hilario Productions presents Cirque du Jour Circus School, pizza making, super hero and pirate nights, painting, movies, sports and family activities, team-building challenges.
- Dolphins (ages 10-12) – Wii games, Hilario Productions presents Cirque du Jour Circus School, sports and family activities, arts & crafts, icebreaker party, scavenger hunt, team-building challenges
Entourage Teen Program is for children ages 13 through 17. With their own private “space” aboard the ships, teens will have a blast with Wii games, movies, arts, music and “hanging out” with their new friends.
This program is also complimentary and supervised that is organized into 2 age groups (ages 13-14 and 15-17) to ensure that all activities are age-appropriate and engaging.
Some of the teen activites are Wii and video arcade, sports events, Hilario Productions presents Cirque du Jour Circus School, movies, White Hot Party for teens, Icebreaker, and Thirst parties, fun workshops, arts and music, pool games and night-time parties.
You can see how your kids will easily entertained while you have some fun of your own, but family vacations are certainly meant for some family bonding time too. Norwegian Cruise Line has that covered as well.
Some fun activities that you can do together as a family are:

- Bowling — yes, you read that correctly, a bowling alley on a cruise ship!
